Connecting Communities through Coalitions

Our coalitions bring concerned community members together to prevent substance abuse among East Texas youth. We have three coalitions that cover 13 counties: East Texas Substance Abuse Coalition covers Smith, Rusk, Cherokee, Henderson, and Van Zandt counties. Smart Start Coalition covers Marion, Harrison, and Gregg counties. Northeast Texas Coalition Against Substance Abuse covers Titus, Morris, Cass, Franklin, and Bowie counties. Each coalition focuses on the environmental problems in their communities that are causing teens to abuse substances. After the coalitions identify the problems and causes, the members come together to address the problems with evidence-based strategies.

38.4 % of East Texas teens said they started drinking alcohol before age 13
23.3 % of East Texas teens have used marijuana
26 % of Texas Teens Were Offered, Sold, Or Given An Illegal Drug On School Property
“Our Mission, quite simply, is to end underage substance abuse in East Texas. Everyone in our community has a role to play.”
